The Twenty Cent Piece

The Twenty Cent Piece

The Twenty Cent Piece was minted between 1875-1878 in three US mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco and Carson City. It was a very short-lived series and only one design was ever made for it, struck in 90% silver. On the obverse of the coin depicts lady liberty seated on a rock holding a shield with the word liberty in it, with the other hand holding a flag. Around Lady Liberty are 13 stars which represent the original 13 colonies, with the date located below. The reverse of the coin depicts the American Eagle holding an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. Around the top of the coin there are the words “United States of America” and below the branch you will find the mint mark at 6 o’clock. Then at the very bottom the words “Twenty Cents” are inscribed.
